The Coffee House on Sirius

E-mail Print PDF

This is a station reserved for those singer-songwriter types and acoustic versions of all kinds of songs that originally had a much more powerful sound. I actually heard a slowed-down acoustic version of Van Halen’s Jump from 1984. I can’t say it was one of the best acoustic versions I have heard on The Coffee House, but I rarely hear anything on this channel that I do NOT like! You won’t be able to say that about any terrestrial radio station.

What is far more common on The Coffee House are artists of a wide array doing simpler, softer versions of their own, or other artist’s songs. This station is definitely in my top 5 on Sirius and holds a programmed spot on every band. I suppose the reason for that is because I am rarely ever not in the mood to hear some soft smooth sounds of the guitar accompanied by voices like James Taylor, Jack Johnson, The Beatles, Bruce Springsteen, Amy Winehouse and Dave Matthews.

In addition, there a lot of artists on this station putting out some real quality music - that you have likely never heard of before. You know, like those guitar players sitting in the corner of the coffee shop singing way beyond their pay scale, and you just stop and think – wow, what a great rendition of that song! Well that’s exactly what this station is about.

The Coffee House is unique as well because this station actually has a studio where guests artists come in and perform on occasion, live and acoustic. Recently for example Sarah McLaughlin did a session live and it flowed perfectly with the channel format and audience. She went through about 12 songs that included all of her hits done with her and another guitar player and just a couple of microphones.

Think of Sunday morning with Van Morrison, a sunny summer afternoon with David Gray, or a long drive with the silky voiced Jewell and you are in The Coffee House.
